Schloss Wilkendorf, Germany

Located 25 miles east of Berlin city centre and in one of the most scenic areas of Brandenburg, the site was purchased by the developers Henning Von Harlessem of Berlin and Suter and Suter of Switzerland shortly after the re-unification of Germany. EGD was commissioned to design two 18 hole golf courses and an academy.

The championship course which measures more than 7100 yards with a par of 72, was designed in association with Sandy Lyle. The site, with its rolling undulations, was the perfect terrain for Sandy’s first design in Europe and the influences of many of his favourite links courses are clear. Wide fairways, deep bunkers and well-guarded rolling greens will make for a demanding test particularly from the back tees.

The second course, branded the PGA course, measures 6500 yards with a par of 72 and is Berlin’s first 18 hole public golf course. The importance of providing good teaching and practice facilities for what is still a relatively new sport in this part of Germany was recognised and April 1995 saw the opening of the golf academy. This includes a substantial driving range equipped with the latest video technology, a number of practice greens and three training holes.

Teaching courses have already commenced and are proving popular with beginners. The Sandy Lyle course opened in May 1995, and the PGA course opened in September 1995.
